For firms that are already NEBB certified, the candidate only needs to bring the instruments
necessary to perform the functions listed on Form B. Therefore, if you have one instrument that
performs two or three functions, the candidate only needs to bring that one instrument to the exam.
The candidate must bring a current calibration certificate for each instrument requiring calibration.
If you have questions about the instrumentation or any other items, please contact this chapter at Mike Giles, TCC @734-216-4541 or Kevin Macauley, Proctor @810-853-9009
Items to bring to the exam in addition to the instruments listed above:
* Calculator
* Text Books and any other resources
* NEBB Procedural Standards, current edition
* Hand Tools: Screwdriver, cordless drill, pliers, wrenches, etc.
* Pencils, Erasers, Highlighters
* Photo Identification
A certificate of insurance in the amount of $1,000,000 naming the National Environmental
Balancing Bureau and Michigan EBB chapter as additional insured must be furnished. This
certificate must be submitted to the chapter at the time of the exam in order to be allowed to
test.
The NEBB practical exam consists of two sections.
- Hands-On Test - Air 2 hours
- Hands-On Test - Hydronics 2 hours
A goal of the hands-on test apparatus sections is to evaluate your TAB skills in a single, simulated HVAC system, rather than on individual unrelated tasks.
You will be required to perform TAB procedures in accordance with NEBB procedures on a
previously prepared standardized test setup. During the course of the TAB procedures, you will
demonstrate proper use of all appropriate instrumentation, procedures, and techniques required
for the complete TAB work of both an air and hydronics test apparatus. You should properly
assess the performance of the test setup and satisfactorily explain any discrepancies or
performance deficiencies. NEBB TAB report forms shall be used for reporting the results of the
TAB effort. Each grading sheet lists the minimum required tasks that you are required to accomplish. Proctors will have some interaction with you during this portion. Proctors may ask questions at appropriate times during your activities. You will be furnished with a copy of the system drawing, showing equipment and design criteria for the outlets. You are allowed to mark-up this drawing as you wish. Copies of the submittal sheets for the various components in the systems will be available.
At least two proctors will witness you at all times. Each hands-on section consists of specific
objectives and primary objectives. You must pass all of the primary objectives and attain a
passing grade of the specific objectives. To successfully pass the practical examination, you will need to be very familiar with the NEBB Procedural Standards, proper use of instruments, and demonstrate supervisory skills. You are urged to study and practice TAB procedures in the field.
The Practical Exam requires candidates to test operating fans and pumps with live high-voltage electrical power. Pumps, fans and other equipment in the test lab may have moving parts. This equipment can pose a serious safety hazard. Improper and/or unsafe procedures around this equipment can cause injury or death. NEBB and this chapter require all candidates to have hands-on experience with this equipment and knowledge of safe work procedures.
If a test proctor witnesses, in his judgment, a test candidate performing unsafe procedures, the task will be immediately stopped. The candidate will lose scoring points for that task. The candidate will then, at the proctor’s discretion, continue the Practical Exam at a different task.
